YOU’VE BEEN AWAY FOR TOO LONG…IT’S TIME TO COME BACK(2)

Continuing from the previous post, talking about hurting God and how to come back to Him. Today, we would discuss some of the consequences of staying away for too long.

Asides hurting God, there are so many other consequences of going against God’s command.

One of them is the fact that Sin breaks the hedge of God’s protection around us, this gives way for the enemy to strike and attack. This hedge is broken because of the break in communication and connection between us and God, as His eyes are too holy to behold iniquity. Job had a constant protection around Him because He was without sin, He was blameless. (Job 1: 8 – 10).
Sin is like making a hole in the wall of your house, giving room for any form of harm”- Anonymous.

This is why it is necessary to repent of our sins once we realize we have sinned. Sometimes, we actually sin unknowingly but there is this witness, a still voice within us that tells us when we have done something wrong. This voice helps to keep us in check, the best thing to do when we hear this voice is not silence it but to immediately repent of the wrong.

Unconfessed sin hinders our prayers too. When there is a delay in the answers to our prayers, it could be as a result of unconfessed sins. Isa 59:1-2 says “Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear” (NIV). No matter how much you pray, worship and do all you can, once there is an unconfessed sin even one as little as telling a lie, His face will be hidden from you and He would not listen.

Also, unconfessed sin hinders us from prospering; “He who conceals his sin does not prosper….” (Proverbs 28:13).

We are not perfect and we cannot live above sin on our own accord or will because we are made of flesh and by default, the flesh has a sinful nature and is weak (Mark 14:38, Romans 7: 7-25). “We need to watch and pray so that we do not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” (Mark 14:38). As long as we are putting on flesh, different forms of temptations will come our way. Even Jesus in the flesh despite the fact He is the son of God was tempted by the devil because He was putting on the sinful nature (flesh) (Matthew 4:1-11).

We need His grace to live above sin and resist temptation. “For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose” (Phil 2:13). When Jesus was talking to His disciples about salvation and entering the Kingdom of Heaven, The disciples were astounded at what He said and askedThen who in the world can be saved?" Jesus looked at them intently and said, "Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible." (Matt 19:25-26). A constant walk and devotion with God helps and keeps us from falling into sin. “Submit yourselves then to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

So, if you sin, do not feel so bad or eat yourself up with guilt that it causes you to stay away and hide yourself from Him. All you need do is come to Him in GENUINE repentance. Genuine is emphasized so we would not take His grace and mercy for granted, saying “whenever we sin He would always forgive”; using it as a ticket and free pass to always sin. God cannot be mocked, He knows when you are truly and genuinely repentant. You do not come to Him for forgiveness when you are planning or premeditating to commit the same sin or another sin. You would only be fooling yourself and not God.

Whenever we sin, the devil comes as a voice within us, bringing up all sorts of accusations and really stirring up the guilt in us and this is one of the things that hinder most of us from repenting immediately. But ignore this voice, for we have the blood of Jesus, which was shed for the remission of our sins, to cleanse and purify us from our sins. “For we are justified freely by His grace, through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus” (Romans 3: 24).

In the old testament (before the death of Christ), for the sins of the people to be atoned for and forgiven, they had to kill animals and pour out the blood before the altar of God or rub it on themselves. (Lev. 4, Lev. 5: 14 – 19, Heb. 9:13). Thank God for His love, for Jesus who came and died for us; If not, many of us if not all of us would have a mighty heap of unconfessed sins because in this period of economic meltdown and managing, where is the money to kill animals?, not just any type of animal walking around but one that is without blemish, one without disease. You lie, you kill a goat; you think of something evil, you kill a bull… But His blood is there for you and I Free of Charge (FOC), why let that sin linger for too long unconfessed. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1: 9).

He blots out your transgression and remembers them no more (Isaiah 43:25). The blood of Jesus wipes off our sins from God’s memory, He cast them into the river of forgetfulness and puts up a sign that says “NO FISHING”.

He is always ready to receive you at any time, all you need do is acknowledge your mistake and ask for forgiveness in humility. “If my people who are called by my name will, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and forgive their and will heal their land……” (2 Chronicles 7:14).
