A certain woman had a room in her basement where she
kept her valuables; her gold, money, jewelries, documents etc. Every morning
when she wakes, the first thing she does is go down to the room and make sure
her treasures are safe; she does same thing in the evenings. When there is a
noise, she runs down to check the room. Her heart was there, the room with her
treasures was her life. She kept on heaping and storing a lot of treasures,
nothing else was important to her, she did not help people in need; she just
loved acquiring and storing. One day, while she was away, some people came in
and took all her treasures away. She got back that evening and went to carry
out her normal inspection, only to find out she had been robbed and instantly,
she had a heart attack.
Luke 12 verse 34 says “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (NKJV). Some
of us are like this woman, we are after storing up treasures here on earth and nothing
else matters to us.
Most times, we just want to live The American Dream,
going through life trying to reach the next promotion, move into a better
neighborhood, get the latest cars etc. but neglecting what is most important. You
need to put expanding God’s kingdom first, thereby laying treasures for
yourself in heaven, a place where it can never be stolen or destroyed(Matt 6:19-21).
When seeking and expanding God’s kingdom comes first, you store up treasures there and your heart would always be there. How do you store up treasures in heaven? By doing God’s work, by doing good; giving to the needy, partaking in things that go on in the house of God (church) through your finances or your service. Simply put, treasure in heaven means living life with open hearts and open hands.
Open hearts means we have a heart that God has – one for the poor, the weak, the disenfranchised, and the marginalized.
Open hands means that we live life with a loose grip mentality so that our earthly goods are not used for our own contentment, but rather are used to have an impact on those who are less fortunate for the sake of Jesus Christ.
Wherever your heart is, you would do anything to
make sure things are in order in that place, you would guard it with every form
of security you could possibly get. When the kingdom of God is in your heart,
you would treasure it, His kingdom would come first in everything you do, you
would do all you can to ensure His kingdom moves forward by doing His works.
Having earthly possessions is not bad, we are to
invest and have properties but that does not mean we should neglect God’s work.
Luke 12 verses 16 – 21, which talks about the parable of the rich fool, in
verse 20, the soul of the rich man was required of him and he left the
possessions here on earth then in verse 21, Jesus said; “so it will be for he who lays up treasure for himself , and is not rich towards God”. Meaning
you can get treasures for yourself here on earth but should be rich towards
God.
It is important we store up treasures in heaven not
just here on earth because you enjoy your earthly treasures here on earth only,
you cannot crossover with them. Besides, it is not secured, it could be taken
away at anytime but in heaven, there is guaranteed security and you would enjoy
eternally.
Remain blessed.
